CFO Jimmy Patronis: Victory for Miami Firefighters in Battle Against Cancer
MIAMI - Today, Chief Financial Officer (CFO) and State Fire Marshal Jimmy Patronis was joined by members of the Miami fire service community to announce the passage of legislation providing cancer benefits to Florida’s firefighters. The legislation passed unanimously by the Florida Legislature this year and was signed into law by Governor DeSantis on Friday, May 3, 2019.
CFO and State Fire Marshal Jimmy Patronis said, "Today, we celebrated a victory–Governor DeSantis has officially signed a bill to provide cancer benefits for Florida's firefighters. Cancer is responsible for about seventy percent of firefighter line-of-duty deaths, and that is absolutely tragic. With access to cancer benefits, these brave men and women will now have the tools to fight back.
"Every firefighter battling cancer, every firefighter afraid of getting cancer, and every child who dreams of being a firefighter now knows Florida is in their corner. Thank you to the Florida Legislature, especially President Bill Galvano, Speaker Jose Oliva and Senator Anitere Flores, for their steadfast commitment to helping those who serve our communities daily."
