CFO Jimmy Patronis: We Must Fight for Florida Consumers

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – In recognition of Consumer Protection Week, Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Jimmy Patronis is highlighting the consumer protection legislation that was recently passed in Proyecto de Ley de la Cámara de Representantes 749, Fraud Prevention and Proyecto de Ley de la Cámara de Representantes 959, Department of Financial Services. House Bill 749 increases penalties on unlicensed public adjusters who break the law; combats fraudulent telemarketing calls by requiring licensed warranty agencies to identity their full business name and license number immediately; forces big corporations to allow Floridians to easily cancel subscriptions; and empowers Florida policyholders by ensuring digital insurance applications will communicate with the digital driver’s license. House Bill 959 will require insurance agencies to proactively disclose to policyholders that they’re closing their business; and force public adjusters to notify consumers if they want to capture additional living expenses.

CFO Jimmy Patronis said, “As your CFO, I have been laser focused on protecting consumers, and this year is no different. The Fraud Prevention bill, among many things, will force big corporations to allow Floridians to easily cancel subscriptions without forcing consumers to hop through a bunch of hoops. The legislation will also ensure consumers are protected from unlicensed warranty calls. This year’s agency package aims to protect policyholders by ensuring insurance agencies and public adjusters are up front and transparent with consumers. Thank you to Representative Clemons, Senator Gruters, Representative LaMarca and Senator Boyd for spearheading this important legislation. I appreciate their leadership on this issue and I’m thankful they’re going to bat for Florida consumers.”
House Bill 749, Fraud Prevention and House Bill 959, Department of Financial Services have both passed the Legislature and are headed to the Governor.
