CFO Jimmy Patronis Statement on Passage of Fraud Prevention Bill from House Subcommittee

2/15/2022

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Today, Florida Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Jimmy Patronis issued the following statement on the House State Administration & Technology Appropriations Subcommittee’s favorable hearing of House Bill 749, sponsored by Representative Clemons. This proposal increases penalties on unlicensed public adjusters who break the law; will combat fraudulent telemarketing calls by requiring licensed warranty agencies to identity their full business name an license number immediately; will force big corporations to allow Floridians to easily cancel subscriptions without forcing consumers to hop through a bunch of hoops; and will empower Florida policyholders by ensuring digital insurance applications will communicate with the digital driver’s license. The bill moves next to the House Commerce Committee.

CFO Jimmy Patronis said, “I have made it my mission to empower and protect consumers, which is why this legislative session I’m fighting to force big corporations to allow Floridians to easily cancel subscriptions without forcing consumers to hop through a bunch of hoops. This proposal will work to ensure consumers can cancel a subscription service, the same way they signed up for it. I applaud the State Administration & Technology Appropriations Subcommittee for taking action today to move this legislation forward. Additionally, the people of Florida are lucky to have someone like Representative Clemons who’s got their backs when it comes to fighting fraud and holding big corporations accountable to consumers. Representative Clemons has fought hard to make the lives of Floridians better and with his help I’m looking forward to seeing this bill cross the finish line.”
