Presidente de Compañía de Construcción de Davie Arrestado por Cargos de Fraude de Seguros y Falsificación

10/29/2002

DAVIE-The president of Megen Corporation is facing charges of insurance fraud, forgery, and uttering forged documents stemming from the underwriting of a construction surety bond in the face amount of $3.3 million.

Thomas Hatami, 51, sole officer of the heating and air conditioning company, was arrested Friday at his home, 5478 Pine Lane in Coral Springs, by investigators with the Florida Department of Insurance, Division of Insurance Fraud. Hatami is charged with one count of insurance fraud, one count of forgery and two counts of uttering forged documents, all third-degree felonies. He was booked into the Broward County Jail.

Between February and November of 2001, Hatami allegedly furnished fraudulent financial statements for Megen Corporation, a forged $1 million irrevocable letter of credit by BankUnited, and a forged letter from BankUnited showing the average daily balance of Megen Corporation's operating bank account to a Coral Springs insurance agent. Based on those forged documents, the insurance agent wrote a $3.3 million construction bond covering a construction contract at the Miami International Airport. The Megen Corporation has defaulted on the airport construction contract.

The Department of Insurance, Division of Insurance Fraud, investigates various forms of fraud in insurance, including health, life, auto, property and workers' compensation insurance. Cualquier persona con información acerca de este caso u otra posible confabulación de fraude debe llamar a la Línea de Ayuda al Consumidor del departamento de Fraude al 1-800-378-0445.
