Department Suspends Miami Bail Bondsman’s License

TALLAHASSEE-The Florida Department of Insurance has suspended for six months the license of a Miami bail bondsman for soliciting business in a correctional facility.

Jose Castiel, 31, of Miami, illegally approached at least one inmate incarcerated in the Miami-Dade County Jail. During an unsolicited meeting that resulted in a bond being posted on behalf of the inmate, Castiel misrepresented the inmate's need for bail by telling the inmate that she did not qualify for alternatives to posting bond, such as pre-trial intervention.

Castiel, who will remain on probation following his six-month suspension, has also been fined $1,000.

Under Florida law, a bail bondsman may not directly or indirectly solicit business in or around a jail, prison or other place where prisoners are confined. Requests for posting bond must be initiated by the prisoner, his or her attorney or a family member.
