Starke Man Accused of Filing Inflated Insurance Claim

2/1/2001

Tallahassee – A Starke man is facing a charge of insurance fraud for filing an inflated property damage claim with his insurance company, Florida Treasurer and Insurance Commissioner Tom Gallagher announced today.

Hassan Rezaei, 50, of 1260 Edwards Rd., was arrested Tuesday when he surrendered to state insurance fraud agents at the Bradford County Jail. Rezaei is charged with insurance fraud, a third-degree felony under Florida law. He faces up to five years in prison and up to a $5,000 fine.

Rezaei submitted a claim stating that lightning struck his home and damaged his television, videocassette recorder, septic tank pump and a large tree in his back yard. But investigators said the receipt submitted to repair the septic tank had been altered to show a total of $1,435 instead of $435, and that the receipt from the tree company was fake.

The case will be tried in Bradford County by the State Attorney's Office in the Eighth Judicial Circuit of Florida.
