CFO and State Fire Marshal Jimmy Patronis: 5 Fire Safety Tips for Fourth of July

TALLAHASSEE, Fla.— With fireworks starting an average of 18,500 fires per year causing an average of three deaths, 40 injuries, and an average of $43 million in direct property damage, Chief Financial Officer (CFO) and State Fire Marshal Jimmy Patronis reminds Floridians to take necessary safety precautions while celebrating America’s Independence. As a reminder, fireworks in Florida are only allowed with specific exemptions. Sparklers, however, are allowed and should be used with extreme caution.

CFO and State Fire Marshal Jimmy Patronis said, “Fourth of July is a time to celebrate our freedom with family and friends. We have to take steps so that celebration doesn’t end with a trip to the emergency room or the loss of life or property. I encourage Floridians to stay safe with a few basic tips.”

1.      Monitor children and pets. Never allow children or pets to play with sparklers and always provide adult supervision.

2.      Light one sparkler at a time. Never attempt to ignite more than one sparkler at a time. Move away once they are lit and never attempt to reignite.

3.      Be prepared. Always have a fire extinguisher or a water hose on hand and soak used sparklers before throwing them away. A sparkler can reach temperatures of more than 1,200 degrees. To put that in perspective, glass melts at 900 degrees.

4.      Abide by all local laws and ordinances. Check with your county or city officials for ordinances or burn bans in your local community.

5.      Asista a un espectáculo de fuegos artificiales público. Many local governments make significant investments to put on professional fireworks shows. Considere asistir a uno de ellos en su área en lugar de hacer uno propio.
